Ponchatoula
is a small town in Tangipahoa Parish, southeast Louisiana that is known as the Strawberry Capital of the World. It has a population of approximately 5,000 residents. Ponchatoula is an old city and its name is derived from the name from the Choctaw Indian language meaning hair to hang because of the abundance of Spanish moss on the trees surrounding the area. The town of Ponchatoula has several unique attractions. The old train depot has been converted into the Country Market, a series of booths for local craftsmen and artisans. Next to that is the Art Car, which is a train car that has been turned into an art gallery for local painters. In the same block lives Ole Hardhide, an alligator credited with writing a column in The Ponchatoula Times newspaper. The current Hardhide is the fourth by that name. Other attractions include the Collinswood School Museum, a former one room schoolhouse that now houses artifacts and quilts and the Strawberry Train, which is a steam engine and single car that is set up for children to safely climb onboard and check it out. The Ponchatoula Chamber of Commerce office is located on Highway 22 at the railroad tracks and has information on these and other local sights in the area. Ponchatoula is also host to the annual Strawberry Festival and an annual Oktoberfest each October. The Strawberry Festival offers rides, free entertainment, lots of food booths, parades and a kiddie land.

Semi-tropical conditions prevail in most areas of the state, but especially in southeast Louisiana, which is greatly influenced by the Gulf of Mexico. This region experiences over 180 days of sunshine annually and abundant rainfall, often as a spin-off from tropical storms. Snow and ice are rarities in Louisiana. During the summer and fall, tropical storms and hurricanes frequently batter the state, especially along the coast, and can cause severe flooding.
