Covington is a town of approximately 8,500 located in St. Tammany Parish in southeast Louisiana. It is situated at the fork of the Bogue Falaya and Tchefuncte Rivers and is part of the New Orleans Metropolitan Statistical Area. The earliest known settlement in this area by Europeans was in 1800 by Jacques Dreux. In 1813 John Wharton Collins established a town at the site of present day Covington with the name of Wharton. The city was renamed after General Leonard Covington, a hero of the War of 1812. In 1888 the railroad came to town and many people who worked in New Orleans started living in Covington, commuting across Lake Pontchartrain on the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway. Today, Covington is a lovely community of beautiful gardens and trees, upscale shops, fine restaurants, cultural events and peaceful neighborhoods. Several art galleries are located in Covington and, in fact, one of the largest buildings in the downtown area is the Art Association. A farmer's market is held on the grounds of the City Hall and offers locally grown produce as you shop to the sounds of local musicians. It is also home to a restaurant named Best New Restaurant in the New Orleans Region by New Orleans Magazine.

Covington Weather & Climate

Southeast Louisiana near the Bogue Falaya and Tchefuncte Rivers, has a warm, wet, semi-tropical climate. The close proximity to the Gulf of Mexico definitely has an influence on the weather.
