Winnfield
is a small city of about 6,000 residents located in Winn Parish in north central Louisiana. Historical homes and folklore abound in Winnfield and the town is proud to boast that it is home to three governors; Huey P. Long, Earl K. Long and O.K. Allen. Memorabilia from the town's rich political history is displayed at The Old L&A Depot. Winnfield is also home to the Louisiana Political Museum and Earl K. Long Memorial Park. A short drive takes you to the Kisatchie National Forest, which is spread across 7 Louisiana parishes, with Winn Parish located at its heart. The Kisatchie is Louisianas only National Forest and is comprised of 5 managed land units, called Ranger Districts, which total over 604,000 acres of public lands. The forest offers 355 miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, or ORV riding. Other recreational opportunities include four lakes, an 8700-acre wilderness, and dozens of campgrounds. Other nearby attractions include Saline Lake and the Saline River. Located on the Natchitoches/Winn Parish, Saline Lake encompasses 8,400 acres and is home to good populations of largemouth bass, crappie and sunfish. The Saline River/Bayou is located on the west border of Winn Parish and is designated as a Wild and Scenic River. It is protected by the National River Program and is located on U. S. Forest Service property.

Central Louisiana has a humid subtropical climate with some continental influence in the wintertime. Summers are very hot and humid and winters are pleasant and mild. Occasional cold snaps are possible in winter, but they do not last long. Central Louisiana receives plentiful rainfall year round and snowfalls in this area are rare. Tropical storms and hurricanes have an influence on the weather in central Louisiana, but do not impact it as much as areas closer to the coast. Some low-lying regions may experience flooding during rainstorms.
