Natchitoches
is a city of approximately 18,000 located in the northwestern portion of Louisiana. It was founded in 1714 as part of the Louisiana Purchase, which makes it the oldest French settlement in the state. Named after the Natchitoches Indian tribe, the city of Natchitoches incorporated on February 5, 1819. This charming community has retained its rich European flavor through its architecture, food and lifestyle. The thirty-three block historic district, which fronts Cane River Lake in Natchitoches, includes more than fifty buildings and has been designated a National Landmark Historic District. A mix of Queen Anne, Victorian and Creole-style architecture can be seen throughout the district, including Front Street with its brick thoroughfare and wrought iron balconies. Youll find historic homes and cemeteries, museums, trolley and boat rides, art galleries, antique shops, restaurants and more in downtown Natchitoches. The Natchitoches Meat Pie, a regional delicacy, has been named one of the official state foods of Louisiana. Hollywood has also discovered the quaint town and several movies have been filmed in Natchitoches, including Steel Magnolias. The city is also well known for its popular Christmas lighting festival and is recognized as the "Bed & Breakfast Capital of Louisiana." Other Natchitoches attractions include the Cane River National Heritage Area, an alligator park, a fish hatchery and many recreational opportunities for fishing, hiking and canoeing. In 2004, Natchitoches was named as one of only two "Preserve America" communities in Louisiana.

Central Louisiana has a humid subtropical climate with some continental influence in the wintertime. Summers are very hot and humid and winters are pleasant and mild. Occasional cold snaps are possible in winter, but they do not last long. Central Louisiana receives plentiful rainfall year round and snowfalls in this area are rare. Tropical storms and hurricanes have an influence on the weather in central Louisiana, but do not impact it as much as areas closer to the coast. Some low-lying regions may experience flooding during rainstorms.
