Ville-Platte is a small city located in Evangeline Parish in south central Louisiana. As of the 2000 census, the population was 8,145 residents. The name Ville Platte is French for flat town. Ville Platte has a Historic District that lies on part of the historic El Camino Real or Spanish Royal Road. This very old road was first traveled by settlers in the land that would become the United States. The Royal Road began on the east coast of America, passed through Ville Platte, Bayou Chicot, Natchitoches and led west to California. Ville Platte's Historic District also boasts two buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Ville Platte is home to several annual festivals. This beautiful tree-lined city is also a member of the Main Street Program, sponsored by the State of Louisiana, Division of Culture and Tourism. The Cotton Festival and Le Tournoi de la Ville Platte is held each October and features authentic Acadian music and French square dancing. The Le Festival de la Viande Boucanée or Smoked Meat Festival is a two-day event held the last full weekend in June. Look for smoked meat cooking contests and a cook-off along with a variety of musical groups like Cajun along with rock and roll bands and rhythm and blues groups.

Ville Platte Weather & Climate

South Central Louisiana has a humid subtropical climate with abundant rainfall throughout the year. There is very little difference between summer and winter conditions. It is generally warm and humid for the majority of the year, with well over 180 days of sunshine annually. Some snowfall can occur in the state in winter, but it is rare. Southern Louisiana is prone to hurricanes, which can cause severe flooding. Plenty of warning time is given for these types of storms, however. June is the start of hurricane season in Louisiana.
