Toledo-Bend-Lake
is the largest man-made body of water in the south and the fifth largest (in surface acres) in the United States. It is located on the Sabine River between Louisiana and Texas. Construction on the Toledo Bend Dam began on May 11, 1964, but the area is steeped in history going back to the days of French and Spanish occupation. Many historic sites abound near Toledo Bend Lake. The lake offers superb fishing and boating, excellent hiking, birding, camping, sightseeing and other outdoor activities. Toledo Bend Lake is surrounded mostly by undeveloped land, with the Sabine National Forest on the Texas side of the lake with relatively small enclaves where there are private lands. Toledo Bend Lake is also near the Sam Rayburn Reservoir and Angelina National Forest. Sabine National Forest offers numerous sites for launching your boat into the Toledo Bend Reservoir. In addition, there are many hiking trails in the forest and large wilderness areas for exploration, primitive camping and hunting. Toledo Bend Lake is the site of numerous fishing tournaments and other special events year round, including the Choctaw-Apache Pow Wow, Festival of Lights, Free State Festival, Loggers Festival and Sawmill Days. The Louisiana side of Toledo Bend Lake lies within Sabine Parish and communities in the area include the towns of Many, Zwolle, Pleasant Hill, Florien, Converse and Fisher.

West central Louisiana has a humid subtropical climate. Rainfall is abundant with the normal annual rain just over 51 inches. Severe thunderstorms with heavy rain, hail, damaging winds and tornadoes are possible in spring and summer. The winter months are normally mild with an average of 39 days of freezing or below-freezing temperatures per year, though ice and sleet storms do occur. Summer months are very warm and humid, with temperatures exceeding 95 degrees about 32 days per year. High to very high relative average humidity sometimes exceeds the 90 percent level.
