Leesville
is a historic town located in Vernon Parish in west-central Louisiana. The city is home to the Fort Polk U.S. Army installation. The populations of Leesville and Fort Polk combined are approximately 20,000. Recreational activities in Leesville include golf, tennis, biking, hiking, canoeing and 3 nearby lakes provide some of the best fishing in the country. Leesville is also near the Kisatchie National Forest. Leesville is home to the Museum of West Louisiana, a complex of historic buildings located on South Third Street. The main building is the former Kansas City Southern Railway Depot, built in 1917, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. There is also a Railroad Section House, a Shotgun House, a circa 1850s Dogtrot Style House, and a Pioneer Style Barn. The Leesville National Register Historic District is also on Third Street in the heart of the old business district. The crown jewel of the district is the historic 1910 Vernon Parish Courthouse, which is a classical revival style building topped with an elegant dome. The courthouse is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Southeast Louisiana, near the Gulf Coast, has a warm year round climate with hot, humid summers and mild winters. Semi-tropical conditions prevail in most areas of the state, but especially in southeast Louisiana, which is greatly influenced by the Gulf of Mexico. This region experiences over 180 days of sunshine annually and abundant rainfall. The normal daily temperatures range from 52 degrees F. in January to 82 degrees F. in July. Snow and ice are rarities in Louisiana. During the summer and fall, tropical storms and hurricanes frequently batter the state, especially along the coast, and can cause severe flooding.
