Lake-Bruin is located in Tensas Parish in northeast Louisiana. This beautiful, clear lake was once part of the Mississippi River. The 53-acre site was originally established as a fish hatchery in 1928 and in July, 1956, legislation was signed authorizing the formation of a state park. Initially it was named Lake Bruin Wayside Park, but was later changed to Lake Bruin State Park. There are over 3,000 acres of water surface on Lake Bruin and it is well known for its excellent fishing, boating and waterskiing. Centuries old majestic cypress trees line the lake, making it one of the most picturesque spots in the state. Three large fishing piers, a boat launch and boat shed for docking are all conveniently located at Lake Bruin and boat rentals are also available. Largemouth bass fishing is popular year round and crappie (white perch) is popular in early Spring. Bluegill is found in the shallow waters at both ends of the lake. Other recreational activities in Lake Bruin State Park include hiking, picnicking, canoeing, rafting, horseback riding and camping. Nearby area attractions include the Winter Quarters State Historic Site, which is one of the rare plantation survivors of the Civil War, and the Tensas National Wildlife Refuge. For those who love camping, Lake Bruin offers both full service campsites with water and electricity and primitive camping for those who like to "rough it."
