Grand-Isle is a small town situated on a barrier island of the same name, located at the mouth of Barataria Bay where it meets the Gulf of Mexico. The town has a full time population of approximately 1,500 residents, but during summers, that number increases to over 12,000. Grand Isles only connection to the mainland is a causeway bridge, located near the west end of the island, which connects to Lafourche Parish, Louisiana. Grand Isle State Park is located on the east end of the island and is the only state-owned and operated beach on the Louisiana Gulf Coast. This beach is frequented by people from the Greater New Orleans area. Grand Isle is called "The Sportsmans Paradise," and offers surf fishing, pier fishing, boat fishing and is home to more than a dozen chartering services. The island has several marinas and bait shops and many small competitions and fishing rodeos during the summer months. Other Grand Isle special events include the Independent Mardi Gras Parade, the annual Grand Isle Art Exhibition, usually held in April and an annual Christmas Tree Lighting Celebration. Grand Isle has been repeatedly hit by hurricanes throughout history. Hurricane Katrina hit the island very hard in August, 2005, destroying or damaging homes and camps along the entire island. Large waves damaged the bridge linking Grand Isle to the mainland and a month later, the island was further affected by Hurricane Rita. By mid October of that year, many businesses were already opened on the island.
